Katrín Sveinsdóttir, our insect farmer, and Ryan Ham, a Master’s student at the University Center of the Westfjords, have been conducting a range of tests on the optimal stocking density and substrate compositions for rearing black soldier fly larvae on fish offal. The work is a part of Ryan’s thesis and a very valuable step in Víur’s way towards getting a broad understanding of how the black soldier fly reacts to fish offal.

Although the results are not yet in, eyeballing indicates that the growth rates are quite good and with acceptable larval mortality rates.
